Honing
Honing is as important as sharpening the skates. If you don't hone the blades the edges will have burrs left on the edges. Those burrs will greatly affect the skating.
There are two types of blades that needs different ways of honing. Blades with coating and blades without coating.
Blades without coating
A quick rundown on how to hone blades and skates before and after sharpening:
Blades with coating
Blades with a coating has a convex shape:
That convex shape makes it harder to get to the burrs at the edges. You need to angle the hone approximately 5 degrees to get to the burrs.
Here's a quick rundown on how to hone coated blades.
The X-3 combi hone, blade oil and leather hone is all included in the Honing kit. The kit also includes a polishing hone, a fine hone and fork hone. If you really want to have a smooth finish use the polishing hone between honing with the blade oil and the leather hone.
Profiling
Accessories
Prosharp offers a wide variety of accessories to help with sharpening and profiling. You can find video instructions of these accessories in this section (A-Z).
Blade Straightener
Prosharp® Profile Copier
Prosharp® Profile Checker
Choose three points on the blade to see if it is a single radius profile or a combination profile. Note! An eventual pitch will not be visible with the Profile Checker.

Troubleshooting machine
The machine can't be powered on.
The machine sledge's motion is jerky.
The grinding wheel bounces on the blade.
The grinding wheel is vibrating.
The machine is working but the grinding wheel isn't spinning.
The machine's sledge stops and the control panel starts blinking red.
The dressing tool is loose. Making the dressing of the grinding wheel uneven.
The scale knob for wheel position doesn't affect the wheel arm.
The machine does not follow the point marks on the skate holder. The point marks is used for setting how long skate holder travels during profiling/sharpening, for more information on setting the skate holder movement see the chapter on Profiling". Solution; Resetting the circuit board calibration.

Troubleshooting sharpening/profiling
Channel-Z is not straight or misaligned. Check;
1. A Channel-Z that looks like it curves indicates that the blade is bent. 2. A Channel-Z that goes from edge-to-edge indicates that the machine’s parallel setting is off. 3. A misaligned Channel-Z indicates either that; a) The scale knob is set to the wrong blade thickness (applies only for the older AS1001 /AS2001 without self-centering clamp mechanism). b) The dress handle plate needs to be adjusted. 4. A correct Channel-Z. The channel can be slightly misaligned and still give the equal amount of glide and grip as a perfectly center aligned channel. Solutions; 1. Use the Blade straightener to make the blade straight. 2. Change the parallel settings. 3. a) Use the Hollow & Thickness Checker to check the blade thickness, set the scale knob to that thickness. Alternative solution; If it's still off you may need to quick fix the scale knob. b) The dress handle plate needs to be adjusted.

The grinding wheel grinds off too much steel when profiling/sharpening.. Solution;
|
The current profile is unknown for the skater and she or he wants the same profile as before. Check; Use the Profile Checker to see if it is a single radius profile or a combination profile on the blade. It's only possible to see the current radius of profile (RoP) on one specific point of the blade with the Prosharp® Profile Checker.
Choose three points on the blade to see if it is a single radius profile or a combination profile. Note! An eventual pitch will not be visible with the Profile Checker. Solutions; If it is a single profile; profile the customer's blades with the corresponding profile template and inform the customer of what profile the he or she is skating on. |
The Blade Angle Tester shows that the edges are uneven even though you've done all the correct settings before sharpening according to
